Mixed hearing loss has elements of both conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss; trouble hearing in both the middle or outer ear – known as conductive hearing loss – and the inner ear – known as sensorineural hearing loss. The outer ear cannot conduct sound properly to the inner ear, and the inner ear can’t process the sound to be sent to the brain.
The primary symptoms of mixed hearing loss include difficulty hearing soft sounds and trouble understanding speech, particularly in noisy environments.
Causes of mixed hearing loss can include illness, drugs, genetic causes, head trauma and/or malformation of the inner ear.
